Atlantic Airways, Visit Faroe Islands & Vágar Airport

Visit Atlantic Airways

Atlantic Airways, Visit Faroe Islands and Vágar Airport – Stan is proud to have played a central role in one of the world’s most outstanding tourism success stories. The remote archipelago of 18 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, mid-way between Scotland and Iceland, was scarcely known when Stan first started working the islands’ national airline, back in 2002.

Working closely with partners in the tourism sector, Stan has been a key player in putting this most unusual of destinations firmly on the tourist map. Indeed, tourism growth in recent years has been among the strongest of any destinations worldwide.

In his role at Atlantic Airways, Stan masterminded the achievement of a European Airline of the Year (Bronze) for 2012-13 and helped to build a powerful reputation for innovation among the airline’s industry peers. The airline has achieved success and growth despite operating in one of the world’s most challenging  environments, its base on the mountainous island of Vágar being afflicted by low cloud and, in certain wind directions, severe air turbulence caused by the rugged terrain.

Atlantic Airways is a pioneer, leading the introduction in Europe of a revolutionary satellite-based automatic approach system that enables crew to approach Vágar through the mountains, in cloud, as though they had full visibility.

Working with the airline, tourism team and airport management, Stan is proud to have introduced probably more writers and photographers to these enchanting islands than any other tourism professional. For three years, he also led a concerted campaign to put the Shetland Islands firmly on the tourist map.
